Klein’s History

100 Years & Still Going Strong

In 1925, Maurice and Sara Klein embarked on a journey that would shape the future of grocery retail in Maryland. They opened a small general store in the rural village of Fallston, Maryland, laying the foundation for what would become Klein’s Family Markets. Over fifty years later, their son Ralph, alongside his wife Shirley and their sons Andrew, Michael, and Howard expanded the business, growing it into a network of nine thriving supermarkets throughout Harford County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City.

Today, Klein’s Family Markets is proudly led by a fourth generation of the Klein family, who continue to uphold the values of hard work, community, and excellence in customer service that Maurice and Sara instilled from the beginning. In October 2008, Klein’s Family Markets took a significant step forward by joining the Wakefern Cooperative. By March 2009, all of Klein’s Family Markets stores proudly transitioned to the ShopRite banner, solidifying their commitment to providing exceptional products and service to the communities they serve.

With more than 1,200 associates employed full- and part-time across their stores, Klein’s Family Markets has established a strong presence. From its humble beginnings to its current position as a leader in the grocery industry, Klein’s Family Markets remains a family-owned business focused on providing the best for its customers and employees, striving to live up to its motto: One Family. Serving Tenaciously. Executing with Excellence.

Thank You Valued Customers

Thank you to our loyal customers for shopping with us over the past 100 years. We are humbled to be able to serve your families for generations past and to come. From our beginning days in the humble crossroads of Fallston, to our first move to Rock Spring Rd in the community of Forest Hill, we have been focused on servings the needs of the families in our communities. We sold farm goods, clothes, hunting goods, seeds – if we could get it loaded on a train car in Baltimore we could get it for our customers at our train stop store location.

As Harford County grew and the town and surroundings of Bel Air developed, we changed with our community. We relocated to a larger store in Forest Hill, the one you can shop in today. The county continued to grow with the highways and additional exits, and so we expanded into the communities of Aberdeen and Bel Air, then Riverside / Belcamp and Cardiff. After many years of hoping to do so, we added a store in the Baltimore County community of Jacksonville. Finally, we joined the communities of Parkville & Howard Park, Baltimore with the closure of some competitors and new opportunities for our company.

With your support, Klein’s Family Markets employs over 1,200 employees across our 9 locations. People are hard at work in our stores working 24/7, 365 days a year to serve you, we hope we can continue to meet your needs and be your grocer for another 100 years!
